How to Build a Landing Page That Actually Gets Leads

September 13, 2026 · BizForge

A landing page has one job: turn a visitor into a lead. Not impress them with your design. Not tell your company's story. Not show off your full product catalog. One page, one goal, one action.

Most small business landing pages fail because they try to do everything. Here is the exact structure that works.

The Anatomy of a High-Converting Landing Page

Every effective landing page follows the same basic structure, top to bottom:

1. The Headline (Above the Fold)

Your headline must answer one question in under 10 words: "What do I get?"

Bad: "Welcome to Smith & Associates Professional Services"

Good: "Get Your Roof Inspected Free Before Winter"

The headline is not about you. It is about the visitor's problem and your solution. Write it last after you know exactly what your page offers.

2. The Sub-headline

One sentence that adds specificity. If the headline says what, the sub-headline says how or why.

"Licensed inspectors. 30-minute visit. Written report same day."

That is three concrete details in one line. The visitor now knows exactly what they are getting.

3. The Form (or CTA Button)

This is the most important element on the page and it must be visible without scrolling. The fewer fields, the more leads.

The form field rule: Every field you add drops conversions by roughly 10%. A 7-field form will get half the leads of a 3-field form. Only ask for what you actually need to follow up.

4. Social Proof

Directly below the form, add trust signals:

Social proof reduces the anxiety of giving a stranger your contact information. It answers: "Can I trust these people?"

5. Benefits Section (Not Features)

Three to four bullet points explaining what the customer gets. Focus on outcomes, not processes.

Feature: "We use infrared thermal imaging technology"

Benefit: "We find leaks other inspectors miss"

Features tell people what you have. Benefits tell people what they get. People buy benefits.

6. Second CTA

Repeat your form or button after the benefits section. Some visitors need to scroll and read before they are ready. Give them another chance to convert without scrolling back up.

What to Leave Out

The biggest landing page mistake is adding things that don't help conversion:

The Mobile Test

Over 60% of landing page traffic comes from mobile devices. Your page must work on a phone:

Open your landing page on your phone right now. If you have to pinch-zoom or if the form is painful to fill out, you are losing leads.

Speed Matters More Than Design

A plain landing page that loads in 1 second will outperform a beautiful one that loads in 5 seconds. Every second of load time reduces conversions by 7%.

The fastest way to a fast landing page:

After the Conversion

Getting the lead is half the battle. What happens next determines whether it becomes revenue:

  1. Respond within 5 minutes. Leads contacted within 5 minutes are 21x more likely to convert than leads contacted after 30 minutes.
  2. Thank you page: After form submission, show a page that confirms receipt and sets expectations ("We'll call you within 1 hour").
  3. Automated email: Send an immediate confirmation email with your contact info so the lead can reach you too.
