7 Small Business Website Mistakes That Are Costing You Customers

September 14, 2026 · BizForge

Your website might look fine to you. But if it's making any of these 7 mistakes, you're losing customers without knowing it.

We've audited hundreds of small business websites. These are the problems we see over and over — and they're all fixable.

1. No Phone Number Above the Fold

If a customer has to scroll or hunt for your phone number, you've already lost some of them. Your phone number should be:

For service businesses, your phone number IS your conversion point. Treat it like the most important element on the page.

2. Slow Load Speed

If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load, 53% of mobile visitors leave. Common causes:

Test your speed at PageSpeed Insights (free, from Google). Aim for 90+ on mobile.

3. Not Mobile-Friendly

60-70% of your website traffic is from phones. If your site isn't responsive:

Google uses mobile-first indexing — your mobile site IS your site for ranking purposes.

4. No Clear Call to Action

Every page should answer one question for the visitor: "What do I do next?" If your homepage is just a wall of text about your business with no clear next step, visitors leave.

Make the button big, contrasting, and above the fold. One CTA per page section is enough — don't overwhelm.

5. Missing or Outdated Information

Nothing kills trust faster than wrong information on your website:

Schedule a quarterly 15-minute website review. Check hours, prices, services, and contact info.

6. No Social Proof

Visitors who don't know you need reassurance. Add:

7. No SSL Certificate (HTTPS)

If your site shows "Not Secure" in the browser bar, you're losing customers immediately. Google also penalizes non-HTTPS sites in rankings.

Most hosting providers offer free SSL certificates. If yours doesn't, switch providers. There's no excuse for a non-HTTPS site in 2026.

Quick audit: Open your website on your phone right now. Can you find the phone number in 2 seconds? Does it load in under 3 seconds? Is there a clear "what to do next" button? If any answer is no, fix those three things first — they have the biggest impact on conversions.
